Description

EIP Accelerated (ESL0140) is an integrated four-skill course designed for students required to complete ESL0140 as a condition for admission into undergraduate programs at the University of Ottawa. If you have ESL0140 as a condition for your admission, through this initiative you can complete this course in 8 weeks (from July to August) so that you can start your undergraduate program in September.  Developed to improve your overall competence in listening, speaking, reading, and writing for academic purposes, you’ll be well on your way to succeed with your academic studies in September. 

By the end of the course you will be able to: 

  • Take detailed notes while making logical inferences, organizing information, connecting ideas, and identifying main ideas and supporting details from academic conversations, lectures, and to 10 minutes and from authentic academic texts about abstract and complex subjects
  • Give 8-10 minute oral presentations on research topics and actively participate in academic discussions and debates on complex topics
  • Display advanced conversation skills, such as proposing ideas, comparing information, giving instructions, checking comprehension, and handling disagreements, on complex topics
  • Write well-organized research reports, essays, and summaries while using cohesive devices effectively and paraphrasing and referencing to avoid plagiarism
  • Display mastery of a wide range of vocabulary from the academic word list and of academic grammar
  • Demonstrate academic readiness by using autonomous learning strategies, possessing a good understanding of academic expectations, and developing a clear understanding of academic integrity and norms necessary for university success.

Evaluation

You will need a minimum grade of 70% and a minimum attendance of 85% to pass this course and bridge into your program. Based on your performance in this course, you may be required to complete ESL2121 and/or ESL2361 within the first year of your program.

Campus Integration

A mandatory full-day orientation will be offered on Friday June 28, 2019.  This orientation will introduce you to campus and community life, provide you with strategies for adapting to Canadian and campus culture, and offer you tools and strategies for academic success.

Tuition

$6,016. Tuition covers classes, photocopies and handouts, University and Community Integration workshops, socio-cultural outings.  Tuition does not include textbook purchases and UHIP fees. Students will be exempt from paying incidental and U-Pass fees.

This course is available to you if you are required to complete ESL0140 as a condition for admission into an undergraduate program at the University of Ottawa.  Note that your offer must start fall 2019 for you to be eligible for this course.
